Deadwood was named by the early settlers after the dead trees found in the Gulch. Gold was discovered in 1874 by Colonel George Armstrong Custer who led an expedition into the Blackhills to find a spot to build a Fort. Word of the gold got out and there was a gold rush in 1876. Deadwood was the first small community in the U.S.A. to seek legal gambling revenues in order to maintain local Historical assets. The state legislature legalized gambling in Deadwood in 1989. You can walk down Main Street and having a great time discovering Deadwood.

Gold was discovered in 1875 in this area, with about 300 miners working the placer mines or gold panning from the streams. It is estimated that the miners found millions of dollars worth of gold. Although mining brought settlers to Key Stone and helped the town to prosper, Mount Rushmore National Park has Helped the town to survive through tourism.

The standard-gauge Burlington branch that came to host the 1880 Train's operations was built in several portions between Keystone and Hill City during the central Black Hills mining boom in the 1890's. The Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad pushed its line into the southwest corner of the newly created state of South Dakota in November of 1889. Come and join us for an exciting time. We will be taking a ride on this historic train between Keystone And Hill City.
